"Adelina" - a KPM China Lady from artist Carl Armstrong
“Adelina” represents a very special opportunity. Resident Grovian Museum doll artisan, Carl Armstrong, has used his unique talents to create a reproduction KPM china lady based on an antique original, circa 1840s, that resides in the museum’s collection.
Adelina, a prima ballerina by trade, is hand-made from organic materials – porcelain, paint, cotton and sawdust – in America. Designed to look like an antique doll, Adelina possesses details such as delicate facial painting, an exquisite, brown-painted hairstyle that includes loose braids that terminate in a dramatic looped bun in back - all on a stuffed cotton body with a lightly antiqued finish, and exquisitely modeled china arms and legs. The dolls are marked “Fancy - 2022” upon the back of their shouderplates.
Each doll is unique, so expect slight variations, whether it be in coloration, painting and overall size.
A joy to costume, Adelina was the subject doll of a recent Jeffrey Cook Sewing Workshop held at Carmel Doll Shop. She will help provide hours of enjoyment for the doll couturier in you, with help from the assorted costume kits that Maison Jeffrey, as well as the Carmel Doll Shop Team, have created. A variety of kits are available for you here, and we encourage you to take a browse.
